Generate a Survey Grid

Lay a square or hexagonal grid over an area at a cell size you choose. Survey blocks, drone flight planning, sampling frames.

Why this matters here

Older Indian survey and revenue records sit on the Everest spheroid, not WGS 84. Treating one as the other puts everything a few hundred metres out — enough to move a plot boundary onto a neighbour.

Indian systems included

Kalianpur 1880, 1937 and 1975, the India zone grids, UTM zones 42N to 47N on both WGS 84 and Indian datums, and the WGS 84 state systems.

Bulk paste

Paste a column straight out of a spreadsheet. Anything after the first two values is carried through as a label, and the result downloads as CSV.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cell size measured in?

Metres, at the middle of the extent. Cells at the top and bottom of a large extent differ very slightly in ground size because the meridians converge; over a village that is millimetres, over a state it is noticeable.

Square or hexagon?

Squares are what most survey and sampling work expects. Hexagons have no diagonal neighbours and equal distances between centres, which suits coverage and density analysis.

Can I clip the grid to my boundary?

Yes, if the file you loaded contains areas. Cells outside are dropped and cells on the edge are cut to fit.

Why is there a limit on the number of cells?

Beyond about twenty thousand the browser starts to struggle and the file becomes unwieldy. Increase the cell size or use a smaller extent.
